North Dakota is now the first state in the US to get the right to fly drones with (the particularly vague) “less lethal weapons”. As of the time of writing, the drones are said to be equipped with tasers but nothing stops the police from equipping pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets or sound cannons, as all these fall under the “less lethal weapons” category.

 

The legislation, House Bill 1328, was signed earlier this year but reports gained traction afterDaily Beast ran an article examining the implications of giving the police rights to arm surveillance drones and subdue or attack suspects remotely.
